OS installations

One of the fundamental functions, that is required by everyone who has to administrate a computer network, is an automated OS-installation.
By deploying opsi you can appreciate the advantages, especially when:

  • Setting up a new PC
  • Upgrading or changing the installed OS
  • Reinstalling a misconfigured or damaged PC installation
  • To verify if an issue belongs to the hardware or to the software

An essential opsi feature is that the operating system installation is either package based or image based. Packaged based installations can be used at any large computer network including heterogeneous hardware generations.

Package based installation with an automated setup (unattended setup) means:

  • No customizing is needed for different hardware (as long as supported by the OS)
  • Simple driver-integration for hardware not supported by the OS (e.g. special network interface cards, graphic cards)
  • Easy driver updating
  • Easy integration of OS-updates like service packs or security patches

All necessary customization can be performed on the server side and will be distributed automatically.

The following windows client-OS are actually supported by opsi:

  • Windows 10
  • MS-Server 2016
  • MS-Server 2012R2
  • Windows 8.1
  • MS-Server 2012
  • MS-Server 2008R2
  • Windows 7
  • Windows XP

These Linux client-OS are supported by opsi as well:

  • Ubuntu
  • Debian
  • RedHat
  • CentOS
  • OpenSuse / SLES
  • UCS

This allows you to manage heterogeneous environments (Windows / Linux) with a single software management tool.
