Automatic software distribution: the
opsi-preLoginLoader service

Document Actions
Deploying software in a windows system.

The opsi-preLoginLoader service is a Windows system service which starts on boot time of a Windows client. Via it you are able e.g. to

  • deploy software packages and adapt them to your organizational needs,
  • update installed software packages,
  • automatically install service packs or security patches at the time and to the extent you choose, just by a click on your administrative console,
  • update the signature files of the antivirus software on your client PCs without each client downloading it

The opsi-preLoginLoader service has the following features:

  • It starts every time the PC boots and is intended to fulfill its tasks before the user logs in.
  • It is controlled via a https service from the opsi server in your network.
  • It does not require and will usually not request (or allow) any user interaction.
  • The user starts working with an already completed system.

In order to integrate a client into the opsi administration system the software package opsi-preLoginLoader has to be installed. This setup will hopefully be the last one which has to be done manually! The preLoginLoader package is automatically installed if you do the operating system setup with opsi.

The opsi-preLoginLoader includes an elaborated framework for configuring and managing installation processes. Its core element is the software opsi-wInst, sort of an interpreter of installation scripts.
